Change in mechanical properties by high-cycle loading up to Gigacycle for 316L stainless steel

Naoe, Takashi; Harjo, S.; Kawasaki, Takuro; Xiong, Z.*; Futakawa, Masatoshi

JPS Conference Proceedings (Internet), 28, p.061009_1 - 061009_6, 2020/02

At the J-PARC, a mercury target vessel made of 316L SS suffers proton and neutron radiation environment. The target vessel also suffers cyclic impact stress caused by the proton beam-induced pressure waves. The vessel suffers higher than 4.5$$times$$10$$^8$$ cyclic loading during the expected service life of 5000 h. We have investigated fatigue strength 316L SS up to gigacycle in the previous studies. The cyclic hardening and softening behavior were observed. In this study, to evaluate the cyclic hardening/softening behavior, the dislocation densities of specimens were measured using the neutron diffraction method at the MLF BL-19. The result showed that the dislocation density of a 316L SS was increased with increasing the number of loading cycles. By contrast, in the case of cold-rolled 316L SS, annihilation and re-accumulation of dislocation by cyclic loading were observed. In the workshop, result of neutron diffraction measurement will be introduced with the progress of fatigue test.

Dislocation density of GlidCop with compressive strain applied at high temperature

Sano, Mutsumi*; Takahashi, Sunao*; Watanabe, Atsuo*; Shiro, Ayumi*; Shobu, Takahisa

Materials Research Proceedings, Vol.2, p.609 - 614, 2017/00

Dislocation densities of GlidCop with compressive strain applied at high temperature were examined by X-ray line profile analyses with synchrotron radiation. In order to evaluate the dislocation density, we applied the modified Williamson-Hall and modified Warren-Averbach method. The dislocation densities of GlidCop with compressive strain from 0.011-0.04 were in the range of 5.7-8.0$$times$$10$$^{14}$$m$$^{-2}$$.

To characterize the distribution and anisotropy of dislocations in cold-drawn pearlitic steel wires, X-ray diffraction line-profile analysis was performed using synchrotron radiation micro-beams. The plastic shear strain was generally more severe near the surface than the center of the wire, whereas the dislocation density distribution was almost constant from the center to the surface. On the other hand, the dislocation rearrangement, which evolves the dislocation cell structure, progressed closer to the surface. It was also revealed that a difference between the hardness in axial and transverse wire directions could be explained by anisotropic dislocation density. Line-profile analysis based on diffraction data at elevated temperatures was performed. Whereas the cementite recovery progressed at a constant rate, the ferrite phase recovery rate was temperature-dependent, suggesting that the ferrite phase recovery was less related to that of the cementite phase.

Much of the world's future economy hedges on the ability to improve the efficiency of mechanical machines without sacrificing their performance. This requires the development of lighter and stronger structural alloys. Magnesium alloys are very promising for structural applications, but they suffer from a fatal flaw. The mobility of the dislocations is determined by the bonding within the alloy, and this bonding is best modeled using approaches rooted firmly in quantum mechanics. Here, we compute the electronic structure of a screw dislocation gliding on a prismatic plane within Mg as it passes over its Peierls barrier. We show that the ductility of Mg is increased because some substitutional additions strongly bind to and stabilize a compact core structure for screw dislocations that are formally able to glide on both the basal and prismatic planes.
